School of the Sailor
Western Lakes Station hosts an annual School of the Sailor in late May. This is an annual shakedown cruise on home waters. Saturday is an all-day on the water with launch time around 9:00 and recovery of vessels at about 4:00. The late afternoon is spent is various rigging exercises to familiarize the crew with lines, block & tackle and teamwork.
After supper, the evening sees the beginning of pub night. A ritual of games, yarns, song & drink.
Sunday morning affords the opportunity to share research on various naval or maritime topics.
